This paper addresses the electrical performance of copper clad aluminum fine gauge wire when used as RF shielding in electronic cables. The use of copper clad aluminum as a braided shield offers the surface corrosion resistance and solderability of a solid copper conductor at 62% less weight. Bi-metallic conductors have long been used in high frequency transmission lines. Copper cladding over a core of steel or aluminum is commonly used in twin lead transmission lines and as the center conductor in coaxial cables. Traditionally these materials have not been used in braided shields. This paper addresses the use of copper clad aluminum in a braided coaxial cable shield. Comparisons of screening attenuation and video performance are presented.
