Science and its cultural and societal importance need continual communication and explanation for the general public. Space science and technology possess a substantial public appeal and could be promoted in creative ways, being the ideal subject for fiction works. At this regard, the widespread popularity and unsurpassed sense of involvement associated in particular with the gaming interactive experience makes the videogame a well-suited medium to spread interest in space-related themes.rnThe aim of this paper is to describe the potential of the videogame medium to communicate, educate and inspire the general public to space science and space activities, and to propose a videogame-based public outreach strategy.rnThe evolution of the idea of space in past and current videogames is reviewed with particular regard to actual space themes rather than science fiction ones. Furthermore, this paper identifies and discusses the issues concerning space promotion through videogames. An analysis of new game concepts based on a "simulation" and "inspiration to space" approach is also provided.
