For quite a long time the vision of space exploration has been keeping the people exited. However a long debate divides the experts: whether it should be continued with manned projects or robotic spacecrafts should take the lead. There might be a compromised solution in the form of human space missions with extended robotic support. This paper tries to sum up the history of successful robot manipulators like Shuttle Remote Manipulator System and Space Station Remote Manipulator System. It tries to take a closer look on present day requirements regarding new models, hardware and software systems. Possible solutions are also discussed in order to outline future trends in robotics. Autonomous robotic systems may be the key to keep up the spin of space exploration.
