摘要

SHENZHOU is the first manned spacecraft developed by China. In order to make the astronaut return earth safely, several key subsystems concerning re-entry atmosphere must be developed successfully. One of the most important is the thermal protection system (TPS). The following subjects in the evaluation of TPS are introduced. Based on the correct analysis of the re-entry heat environment over the surface of thermal protection shield, the most suitable TPS concept is chosen. Under the support of ground tests ablative materials have been screened and the thermal protection structure is verified. Some local thermal protection problems are treated very carefully and also verified by ground tests. The TPS of the spacecraft has been verified by the successful flight.
