SPATIAL FORMATION OF VARANASI, INDIA - An Analysis of the Urban Structure (Pilgrimage Roads, Mohalla as Community, Composition of Block and Houses)

The purpose of this study is to consider the space formation of the inner city of Varanasi in northern India based on our field survey. This paper discusses, first the basic urban structure of Varanasi focusing on the geographical factor, streets systems, habitat segregation and the system of pilgrimage roads, and secondly the circumstances of the physical urban space, analyzing the distribution of religious facilities (temples and shrines), the character of the pilgrimage roads and mohalla, and the composition of the block and houses. Then we consider the relation between the formation of urban space and the religious idea.
