Innovative Solutions of GIS Substations - Life Cycle Considerations and its Impact on Asset Management

The metal-enclosed gas-insulated switchgear GIS is made to ensure the best possible relationship between design, used materials, maintenance effort and maintenance intervals. The result is an optimized utilization as an important asset of the electrical power industry. In addition to the existing solutions for high voltage substations (GIS and AIS) several innovative compact concepts, based either on AIS switchgear or on GIS switchgear or on a combination of both of them, entered in the market recently due to the rapid change and the stronger focus on asset management in the liberalized market. Criteria for evaluation and optimization of the assets are needed to choose the optimum solution for the individual substation. While in the past most evaluations on economic benefits quite often end up with the capital cost of the investment, today the overall life cycle cost consideration (LCC) including service and end of life costs are regarded. Also environmental aspects have to be considered. Only this approach offers a fair comparison of solutions of different types of applications of modern equipment. In this contribution the innovative solutions of the state of the art will be presented and its impact of the various influences on the assets will be defined. Recommendations will be given for an optimized application of gas insulated switchgear. Various methods of evaluation of life cycle cost of the different substation technologies will be presented. The duly investigation on the life cycle cost and a tight asset management reduces the overall cost of a high voltage substation and contributes to the economical benefit of the operating utility.
