Along with the stepping up of transmission voltage and increase of delivered electric quantity and transmission distance in the development of power system in our country, more and more attentions have been paid to the reliability of shunt reactor in order to ensure the security in the transmission. Because of the features in regional structure, power resources and load center distribution of our country, national network interconnection and the diversion of electricity from the western to the eastern regions have necessarily become the objectives of the development of power system of our country. Under the existing conditions of our country, e.g., population distribution, time domain variations, long transmission lines and lower load, the reliability and operational security of shunt reactor, facilities in transmission systems and protections play a very important role in power system stability. The shunt reactors that are in operation in power systems are configured of the groups of series-connected coils together to be assembled into the air-gap core equipment to form the EHV single winding inductive equipment or split-core magnetic valve controlled inductive equipment. For this structure and features in operational process, the present research and configurations both at home and abroad still fall far short of the development of the suitable protections. It is necessary to carefully investigate the defects of existing conditions to really develop and create the new protections in combination with the operational needs to enhance the operational security and reliability of power system.
