An extensive test program was carried out into the effect of nitriding on the fatigue limit in rotating bending of shouldered shafts having diameters 6 or 7.5 mm. The radii of the shoulders varied from 0.06 mm to 1.0 mm. Three materials were used, EN40B (24CrMol3), 42CrMo4 (4140) and C45 (1045). The applied nitriding processes were gasnitriding, nitrocarburizing and saltbath nitriding. The analysis of the more than 1200 fatigue tests can lead to an improved prediction of the fatigue limit of nitrided shafts for machinery and engines in the design stage.
