Local approach analysis of the fatigue performance of aluminum alloy fastener joints

Fatigue performance of an Aluminium alloy 2024 fastener joints was investigated using edge-cracked and uncracked specimens with different levels of interference fit. The experimental results showed a dependency of fatigue life to failure on the specimens geometry and the interference fit level. Eased on the net section stress, edge-crack specimens' life was an order of magnitude less than the uncracked specimens, whilst uncracked specimens with interference fit showed a life that was about five times more than the life of open-holed specimens. A fairly good correlation of the experimental life has been obtained from a simple local strain analysis. However, the experimental results could not be predicted from smooth specimens uniaxial data and it is proposed that an elastic-plastic multiaxial fatigue analysis is required.
