Performance of a steel making shop is governed by the productivity of its casters. The productivity of a continuous caster depends on its utilization which in turn is determined by its sequence length and yield. Productivity enhancement of its existing 2 casters was taken up at JSW steel, with increase in its iron making capacity from 1.6 Mt to 2.5 Mt to avert the requirement of a new caster. This was brought up by adoption of new technologies for increased sequence length, optimization of casting parameters with the use of empirical models to reduce abnormalities and several in-house developments for increase in yield. These strategies have increased the sequence length, caster yield and per strand productivity. Continuous casting shop has increased its productivity from 0.94 Mt/caster/year and to 1.13 Mt/caster/year to match with the increased steel production. These modules have also resulted in energy savings and reduction in operating cost. The details of the adopted strategies and its impact on productivity enhancement are presented in this paper.
