This work has been performed as part of the EC MAST3 project PROSIM, the aim of which is to develop a shallow water broadband sound propagation model. The numerical technique for solving the wave equation is based on normal modes for the entire frequency band required (0.1-10 kHz). This work describes the comparison of the model output with experimental data obtained in shallow water. We concentrated on transmitted series of identical linear FM-pulses with bandwidth 1-8 kHz. We determined the impulse response of the medium in this band by matched filtering of the received signals. This revealed the multipath arrival structures, which appeared to differ significantly from pulse to pulse. We quantified this variability and its dependence on source/receiver geometry.
