The subject of the paper is natural internal waves packets (IWP) influence on low-frequency sound in shallow water (ocean shelves). The coupling modes method is used to consider sound scattering due to IWP. Within the framework of the coupling modes method the sound scattering leads to two processes. They are redistribution of full sound intensity both between modes and between coherent and noncoherent (fluctuating) components. Such approach allows to show that sound scattering by IWP can be reason of a both additional sound absorption by bottom and increasing of sound fluctuations. Using this approach it is shown that acoustic effects caused by IWP have resonance-like behaviour and strongly depend upon parameters of packets and IW-direction. The results of the paper can be used as basis of acoustic remote-sensing of IWP on oceans shelves.
