The two successful qualification flights of Ariane 5 (in October 97 and October 98 ) behaved very differently from a Guidance, Navigation and Control point of view. But both 502 and 503 launches demonstrated the high robustness and flexibility of the whole control, proving that theoritical studies on ground were meaningfull and correct. The object of this paper is to describe and comment the important phases of Ariane 5 GNC life : ground qualification, flight observation and post flight analysis which lead to flight qualification. Our analysis shows that Ariane 5 GNC algorithms are now very well qualified thanks to a very important ground validation and two qualification flights, the first on the edge of the flight domain and the second right in the middle.
