The KERENA reactor is an evolutionary Gen. Ⅲ+ boiling water reactor concept, which was jointly developed by AREVA GmbH and PreussenElektra GmbH (former E.ON Kernkraft GmbH). The KERENA concept differs from conventional Gen. II reactors. For design basis accidents it provides the ability for long term core cooling by different kind of passive systems, which can perform safety functions without a need for electricity supply. One of several design criteria is that the reactor can be cooled for at least 72 hours solely by passive systems. This objective is met by passive safety equipment of different design, which is used for accident detection, to perform functions of the reactor protection system and for accident management as well.
