Simulation and Application of Blast Wave-Target Interaction

This paper presents example applications of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) computer code to the evaluation of blast wave propagation and interaction problems relevant to the chemical processing and petroleum refining industries. The specific phenomena illustrated in these example applications are: clearing of a blast wave over a wall, enhancement of blast loads behind a door blast shield, and the development of an enhanced negative phase on an enclosure wall. The code used for these evaluations is the Blast Wave-Target Interaction (BWTI~TM) simulation package. BWTI~TM is an integrated three-dimensional (3D) CFD code and visualization system developed by BakerRisk to provide the capability to simulate the generation and propagation of blast and shock waves and the interaction of such waves with structures (e.g., buildings, blast walls, etc.). The code is capable of modeling blast waves resulting from vapor cloud explosions (VCE), bursting pressure vessels (BPV), and high explosive (HE) detonations. BWTI~TM was developed to run on a personal computer (PC) with acceptable run times while still providing reasonably accurate evaluations. The main application area for this type of tool is an engineering-level analysis involving scenarios where blast shielding and focusing are relevant, such that simplified methods may not yield accurate results.
