This paper deals with joint channel estimation andrnpseudo-noise code acquisition for ultra-wideband communications.rnThe estimation and acquisition in a realistic frequencyrnselective channel,and in the presence of additive white Gaussianrnnoise are based on the maximum-likelihood criterion. Inrnparticular,three systems are considered,namely,time-hopping,rndirect-sequence,and bi-orthogonal time-hopping CDMA digitalrnsystems.rnThe efficiency of the synchronization process and the quality ofrnthe channel estimates are assessed and compared via analysis andrnsimulations. Specifically,the performance of different systemsrnare compared in terms of probability of correct synchronization,rnmean-square error of the channel estimates,and bit-error-rate.
