Composite fibre materials are employed today primarily in structural forms that are typical to steel construction. Elements are used with the same cross-sectional shapes as steel and connected using bolts. Since anisotropic composite fibre materials are innately different from isotropic steel, the substitution of composites for steel means that the advantageous properties of composites will not be used to their full potential. For composite fibre materials to succeed on the construction market, it is necessary to develop self-contained, material-adapted structural forms and construction methods that will allow for economic use of the material. This paper presents examples of first steps towards self-contained, material-adapted constructions using GFRP sandwich panels and glued GFRP elements. All projects were scientifically verified. Large-scale tests, also described herein, were carried out to verify both the step-wise development of the gluing technique and integration of the translucent GFRP sandwich panels in the construction method.
