The interfacial physicochemical approach based on surface chemistry, chemical thermodynamics and kinetics may hold one of the essential keys to the development of innovative process in materials processing such as smelting, refining, casting, silicon single crystal growth, etc. A brief introduction will be given on the Marangoni effect of high temperature melts in relation to the materials processing. For example, the local corrosion of refractory by molten slags and metals is mainly due to the Marangoni convection occurring in the vicinity of slag-gas and slag-metal interfaces. Marangoni effect has also quite great influences on the rate of nitrogen absorption into and desorption from iron melts, and behaviors of bubbles and inclusions in continuous casting of steel, especially behaviors of particles in front of the solidifying interface and in the vicinity of the interface between liquid steel and inner. wall of immersion nozzle. Furthermore, flow behaviors of silicon melts in Czochralski and floating zone processes have a close relationship to the Marangoni effect.
