This paper presents a machining error compensation technique based on a tool path adjustment using process intermittent probing (PIP). On machine probing is used to measure the resulting profile of two semi-finishing cuts prior to the final cut. The data is used to anticipate the error after the final cut and so calculate a tool path adjustment of the finished cut which considers both the real depth of cut and the accumulated errors of the previous cuts. The proposed technique is compared with the mirror method that uses only the machining error prior to the final cut in the compensation calculation. The experimental trial for a linear profile shows the effectiveness of the proposed approach, a measured form error of 80 urn is entirely eliminated by the proposed method, compared with only 60% correction for the mirror method.
