The use of bioreactor cells within landfills will likely increase as landfill owners seek to realize the claimed benefits of air space recovery, leachate stability, and improved capture of generated landfill gas. Along with this increase will be the need for more field data that demonstrate the effects of long-term operational changes associated with bioreactor landfill cells. The purpose of this paper is to present landfill gas composition and emissions data collected during the first several months of operation of a bioreactor cell and a conventional landfill cell. Under a new program sponsored by Waste Management, landfill gas emissions testing is being conducted to quantify and compare emissions and gas constituents between bioreactor and conventional cells. This paper summarizes field data from seasonal events of both raw landfill gas and surface emissions sampling for an aerobic-anaerobic bioreactor cell and a conventional landfill cell. Landfill gas constituents include the major gases (N_2, O_2, CO_2, and CH_4), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and nonmethane organic compounds (NMOCs). The results presented in this paper will be of interest to the owners, operators and regulatory agencies in the waste industry where there is a need to describe and measure emissions from bioreactor landfill cells.
