An efficient maximum likelihood (ML) decoding algorithmrnis developed for general linear block coded transmissionsrnthrough Rayleigh block fading channels. Our novel decoding algorithmrnnot only exploits both the channel diversity of block codesrnthrough symbol ordering and the additive white Gaussian noisern(AWGN) model through increasing radius search, but also efficientlyrnreuses intermediate computations by following a recursivernsearch tree. Besides considerable improvements in error performancernrelative to hard-decision algorithms, Monte-Carlo simulationsrnalso indicate that the average decoding complexity of our MLrnalgorithm remains moderate for practical SNR values.
