Use of DSC in Comparison of Ergocalciferol Lots

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) was used as a technique to assess the quality and compare five lots of the drug substance ergocalciferol (vitamin D_2). Results obtained from DSC were compared with those from Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Infrared absorption (IR), and Gas Chromatography (GC). Although TGA and IR also showed differences, DSC and HPLC were the most discriminating techniques, and of these two, DSC would be the quickest to run as a fast screen for product quality.
