Until recently it was widely agreed that the so-called low-temperature degradation of sinter is an important cause of disturbances in blast furnace permeability. This view was based on many years of laboratory investigations and routine tests showing a clear disintegration of many sinters in weakly reducing atmosphere at about 500 deg C.
