This paper presents an investigation of the bulk density of coal with and without moisture and oil addition. For the dry system, the packing of coal with different size distributions such as the Gaudin-Schuhmann, Rosin-Rammler, lognormal and Johnson's S_B distributions is experimentally established, and it is shown that the dependence of bulk density on particle size distribution can be predicted by the previously proposed linear-mixture packing model. For the wet system, it is shown that the bulk density of coal is strongly dependent on the particle size distribution, moisture content, oil addition, and their interactions as well. Based on the measurements, an empirical equation has been formulated for predictive purposes. Its usefulness is validated through a reduced scale model experiment.
