In material physics and chemistry, preparation for an artificially engineered semiconductor structure of nanosized particles with new properties is a major goal. Particles in the range 1-100 ran have been predicted to have unusual optical and electronic properties which may lead to new technologies based on advanced materials, e.g., quantum dots in the miniaturization of electronic devices. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) can be used to build up more complex structure in three dimensions, enabling us to engineer complex organic structure on the top of macroscopic surfaces Importantly, capping ligands or surfactants can be used to stabilize the nanoparticles and prevent the formation of larger particle and agglomerates.
