In the 1960s the NASA Flight Research Center and the Air Force Test Center undertook an experimental program to investigate the low speed problems associated with the operation of piloted wingless reentry configurations. The HL-10 and M2-F2 were two configurations tested. Each of these vehicles had the benefit of a six-degree-of freedom nonlinear real-time piloted engineering simulator. In addition,Linear systems analyses were conducted to complement the simulation studies. Both open-and closed-loop studies of the HL-10 were conducted, however, the studies for the M2-F2 were not as estensive.
