The Advisory Council for AeronauticalrnResearch in Europe (ACARE) identified thernresearch needs for the aeronautics industry forrn2020:rn1. Reducing CO_2 emissions and fuelrnconsumption by 50%rn2. Reducing perceived external noise byrn50% with 10 EPNdB reduction per operationrn3. Reducing NOx by 80%rnFurthermore, since these objectives havernbeen defined the commercial and politicalrnpressure to reduce fuel consumption and CO_2rnhas increased considerably.rnIn this frame, Snecma is currentlyrndeveloping in parallel three enginernarchitectures answering ACARE 2020rnobjectives and recent global warming concernsrnin different ways.rnThe first architecture is a high confidencernAdvanced TurboFan for early Entry IntornService (EIS) minimizing life cycle cost (FuelrnBurn, environment and maintenance costs). Itrnrelies on the CFM56 experience and thernintroduction of proven innovative technologies.rnAt 2015-2017 EIS, the LEAP-X engine isrnalready close to ACARE 2020 requirements.rnThen, two more radically innovative enginernarchitectures have been identified to enhancernenvironmental performances in terms of noisernand CO2 emissions:rn- First one, the Counter-rotating TurboFanrn(CRTF) aims at providing additional noise andrnFuel Burn reductions through a decreasedrnvelocity of each of the two counter rotating fans.rn- Second one, the Open Rotor architecturernis an even more promising concept that deliversrna breakthrough on Fuel Burn and CO2rnemissions thanks to an important propulsivernefficiency without any duct drag penalties.rnFinally, particularly through currentrnEuropean Union (EU) Project VITAL and EUrnProject DREAM and JTI Clean Sky, Snecma hasrnalready started the detailed assessment of twornmain general architectures selected to gorntoward ACARE 2020 goals. In parallel, throughrnthe LEAP-X engine, Snecma will carry onrnbuilding up technological bricks applicable onrnany of these three architectures in order to bernready to answer any future environmentalrnrequirements.
