Real time systems are implemented primarily as programmable systems. The processing power required to drive the real time tasks is provided by processors or programmable controllers, and the role of a developer is to write programs for these devices, using a method for program analysis, design and implementation. There are two approaches to software development currently on the market: Structured and object-oriented, and there are methods dedicated to the development of real time systems within each of these approaches. This is exemplified by books such as a bit old Structured Development for Real-Time Systems, by Ward and Mellor (1985), and Strategies for Real-Time System Specification, by Hatley and Pirbhai (1987), or much newer one Real-Time UML: Developing efficient objects for embedded systems, by Douglass (1998).
