Metastable tetragonal KNbO_3 can be synthesized from the layered perovskite, K_2NbO_3F, via a topochemical reaction at room temperature for 2 - 96 h. The rock-salt type KF blocks in the layered perovskite, K_2NbO_3F, were selectively dissolved in water to give a three-dimensional perovskite, KNbO_3. This transformation has a topotactic character because the perovskite block is preserved.
