Topographic analysis using data from a satellite sensor, ASTER (AdvancedrnSpaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer) was conducted in the Khorat Plateaurnin Northeastern Thailand where carbonate rocks as gas reservoirs are estimated to exist in thernsubsurface. The study consists of (1) topographic analysis to extract an anomaly related to thernhydrocarbon accumulation from ASTER data using certain representation of topographicalrnfeatures; and (2) integration analysis to extract potential areas.rnA parameter test was conducted to examine an optimum rectangular zone within an ASTERrnscene for several topographic features such as slope, aspect, over-ground openness and so on. Tornselect an optimum rectangular zone, information entropy of images was studied. The topologyrnof the entire study area was analyzed using optimum parameters and it clearly revealedrntopographic anomalies which may represent subsurface hydrocarbon-bearing structures.rnTo verify the results of the topographic analysis, a comparison with seismic sections wasrnundertaken, resulting in aspect, slope and over-ground openness images strongly reflecting thernsubsurface structure. As a result of the integration analysis, potential areas that merit futurernexploration were narrowed down by reference to overlapping topographic anomalies from therntopographic analysis, anticline/syncline axes in the interpreted seismic sections and the locationsrnof existing gas fields.
