COMPUTER SIMULATIONS

A workshop on "Computer Simulations" was held 26 June 1999 in Warsaw, Poland, on the occasion of the 24th Session of the "Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage" (CIE). It gathered about 100 participants. The goal of this workshop was to identify the need for international collaboration in the field of computer simulations of lighting phenomena. We present below a very short overview of the major outcome of the workshop. It appeared that the major needs are dealing with the production of data sets obtained from experimentation and calculation to test softwares, formats for data exchange, and techniques to control the quality of the data. Regarding the lighting softwares, it is expected that they offer improvement in userfriendliness of interfaces, better compatibility with CAD softwares and better outputs (parameters more relevant to judge the performance or the quality of the lighting solution). Some topics are covered by Technical Committee TC 3-33 (Test cases for assessment of accuracy of lighting computer programs, chairman Dr R. Mitanchey). Others are relevant to activities in other divisions (Division 2 for the photometric description of lighting sources, Division 8 for the validity of the images generated with computer programmes).
