Analysis of MODIS cloud masking algorithm using directbroadcast data over Korea and its improvement

The information on the cloud presence within a instantaneousrnfield of view is the first step toward the derivationrnof many other geophysical parameters. Here, we first appliedrnthe current MODIS cloud detection algorithm developed byrnUniversity of Wisconsin and compared the results to a visualrninterpretation of composite data, especially during the daytime.rnMost of cases, the detection algorithm performs very well,rnexcept a few cases with over-detection. One of the reasons forrnthe false detection is due to the time independent use of landrninformation which affects the threshold values of visible channelrntest. In the presentation, we show detailed analysis of therncurrent cloud detection algorithm and suggest possible way tornovercome the current shortfall.
