Engineering decisions regarding operations and control at LFG blower and LFG blower/flare facilities are often based on bits and pieces of information. Data are typically gathered in the field and summarized on sticky notes, chart recordings, and monitoring logs. Many times, problems occur when the field tech was getting a good night's sleep or the chart recorder decided to run out of ink. Compiling available data is often times consuming and results in delays in delivering recommended actions. Implementation of operational recommendations is usually delayed in the time it takes to explain the reasoning to the field tech and his respective response time. Once implemented, the review process starts all over. Technology has made information more accessible, usable, and cost effective. With the proper implementation of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), sensors, and controls, operational review can be simple, visual, and systematic. Control changes can be made on-line and instantaneous, while real-time monitoring can be before, during, and after any changes are made. For new facilities to be designed and many of the existing LFG blower and LFG blower/flare facilities due for upgrades, implementation of new control technologies would allow 24-hour/7-day monitoring and control locally and remotely. A client, operator, supervisor, or regulator can be provided with visual access to give real time representation of a facilities operation.
