The Effect of Domestic Hazardous Waste on the Municipal Solid Waste Anaerobic Degradation

Municipal solid includes a proportion of up to 4% (w/w) of household hazardous wastesrn(HHW), that usually include cleaning products, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, home care products, automotive maintenance products, electronic equipment and general maintenance products for machinery. HHW represents any waste produced from a domestic source that contains substances potentially harmful to the human health and environment. In Mexico, few landfills are operating and open dumps are not uncommon. However, none of them discriminate the final disposal of mixed waste. The presence and effect of HHW on soils and water has been studied, yet very little is known on how this products affect the methanogenic degradation of MSW. The aim of this work was to study the effect of acetone, paint thinner, domestic degreaser and vinyl cleaner on the anaerobic degradation of MSW, laboratory scale.
