Modification of surface chemistry and topography is known to alter the in vivo and in vitro responses [1-4]. This knowledge is used in the dental implant industry where surface modification techniques are used to improve the biological response and induce high retention strength between bone and implant.rnTo evaluate different surfaces ability to induce retention with bone, in vivo experiments are commonly used. However, these experiments evaluate the whole implant where the surface modification is only a small part. We have developed a model which gives a theoretical measurement on the ability of different surfaces to induce retention [5]. This model is called the Local model. The model solely evaluates the topography's ability to induce retention and will be beneficial in developing new surfaces and the aim is to reduce the need for animal studies.
