RECOIL PROJECT: PROMOTION OF USED COOKING OIL RECYCLING FOR SUSTAINABLE BIODIESEL PRODUCTION

In the European domestic sector are produced about 1.748 Mts/year of Used Cooking Oil (UCOs), ofrnwhich the main part is improperly disposed off with associated harmful impact in terms of sewage clogging and waterrncontamination. Most of European countries lack wide spread collection systems to collect UCO produced byrnhouseholds, although exist a great potential in the recycling of UCO, which increases interest in the collectionrnprocess, in particular for the production of biodiesel. Biodiesel produced through the transformation of UCO, besidesrnavoiding competition with agricultural food products, has the lowest emissions of greenhouse gas amongst biofuels,rnensuring 88% emission savings. The outcomes of this analysis have been testedrnby 7 pilot projects implemented in five (5) EU countries, as living labs to verify the applicability of the proposedrnstrategies.
