In the Güssing CHP (combined heat and power) plant, dual fluidized bed (DFB) gasification technology is used tornprovide a high quality biomass-derived synthesis gas with a high content of hydrogen and carbon monoxide. Thernsynthesis gas is highly suitable for synthesis gas applications like Fischer-Tropsch (FT) synthesis, mixed alcoholrnsynthesis (MAS) and hydrogen production. Since 2011, a pilot plant for the production of mixed alcohols from thernsynthesis gas has beenin operation. A steam reforming unit and a glycol scrubber are utilized to clean the synthesisrngas. The gas is further compressed and then conducted in the MA synthesis reactor, which is carried out as a fixedrnbed. Afterwards, the alcohols are separated from the gas stream in a condensation unit. The tail gas is expanded backrnto atmospheric pressure and utilized in the CHP plant. Two batches of alkali-doped molybdenum sulfided catalystsrn(MoS2) were successfully tested at the pilot installation. Parameter variations were carried out, particularly focusingrnonvariations in the reaction temperature and the space velocity. The reaction temperature hada profound influence onrnCO conversion, the formation of alcohols and various side reactions.
