This paper will review AC testing on surface mount ceramic capacitors. This paper will review test methods and discuss the factors that effect an MLCCs ability to handle an AC load. Its was written in response to the numerous questions on AC voltage on an MLCCs and the lack of info on the subject out there. Historically surface mount MLCCs have been used as DC blocking and Bypass capacitors. In these applications the MLCC dissipate little or no power. More and more MLCCs are now being used in AC applications as a Film replacement and in DC/DC power supplies as Tantalum replacements. These new applications have prompted many questions on AC ratings and power handling on MLCCs.
