The energy services company of NV EDON, a Dutch energy distributor, is making widespread use of chp.rnEDON is working to develop a variant which produces compressed air rather than electricity. Driving an airrncompressor directly with a gas engine is an attractive option from the perspective of energy conservation.rnThis technique may also prove financially attractive for industrial companies.rnEDON Energy Services is setting up a pilot project with a 200 kW gas engine which drives a screw-typerncompressor. The expected energy saving is 60%, or 165,000 m~3 of Dutch natural gas. The company intendsrnstarting a measurement programme to measure the consumption of natural gas per m~3 of compressed airrnunder different conditions and to compare the results with the electricity consumption of the conventional,rnelectrically-driven compressors. The pilot project will receive financial support from the Dutch governmentrnunder the subsidy scheme for innovative co-generation projects.
