Open-cut mining techniques have come to rely heavily onrnGNSS technology as a critical input into machine controlrnsystems. However, as open-cut mines get deeper thernvisibility to GNSS satellites is greatly reduced, andrntherefore reducing the effectiveness of GNSS positioningrnsystems placed on mining equipment. Locata and Leicarnhave been working together to develop a solution to thisrnproblem using Locata’s ground-based positioningrntechnology.rnDuring late 2006 through to early 2007 the first integratedrnLeica and Locata equipment was installed and tested at arnmajor open-cut mine in South Africa. A backpack, dozerrnand drill system were equipped with integratedrnLeica/Locata positioning technology.rnThis paper will discuss the design and installation of thernfirst “real-world” open-cut mine trial of Locata enabledrntechnology, and present results and analysis demonstratingrnthe performance of the proof-of-concept Leica/Locatarnmining systems.
