Software Safety Implementation on Ground and Ship Based Radars

Software safety analysis of a stationary ground based radar and a ship based radar was recently completed. These analyses include an identification of the hazards involved in operating and maintaining the two different types of radars, and the software safety requirements that are necessary to mitigate these hazards. This paper familiarizes the reader with the software safety design features that are implemented in the controls of these systems in order to manage the potential safety risks inherent in radars. The software safety features are contrasted between the two systems. The difference in the level of software safety analysis rigor between the two systems is highlighted and factors for this difference are presented. The radar's transmittal power/frequency, mission, location, system architecture, and requirements allocation between hardware and software need to be understood in order to understand the complexity and approach of the software safety program.
