Design solutions which have progressed through battery, hybrid, andrnpotential fuel cell configurations for an electric drive heavy-dutyrntransit/shuttle bus are presented in this paper. During the years 2002 andrn2003, especially, our efforts have been concentrated on supplyingrnsignificant design improvements for achieving better performance, greaterrncost-effectiveness, and higher reliability for our 12-meter, 80-passenger bus.rnSince our solutions are balanced among considerations of low emissions,rncost-effectiveness, reliability, and maintaining of a sustainable enterprise,rnwe believe that, at this time, the hybrid electric drive provides the mostrnpractical form of propulsion. Therefore, we have elected to improve ourrnhybrid electric drive system efficiency, especially in regard to life cyclerncosts and low emissions. However, our bus design is configured in form,rnfit, and function for adaptation to fuel cell electric drive technology as itrnbecomes commercially successful.
