Hyundai Motor Co (HMC) has long paid intensive attention to Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) asrnone of the major automotive manufacture in the world. Recently, HMC manufactured HEV loadedrnwith Ni-MH battery system supplied by Panasonic co. and we have continued various performancerntests since 2002. In addition to the development of Ni-MH system, we are developing Lithium ionrnpolymer battery (LiPB) system for HEV by collaboration with domestic chemical company. LiPBrnsystem made up of total 40 cells and battery management system (BMS), consisting of hardware andrnsoftware embodying advanced algorithms, contactors, fuses and miscellaneous cables and connectorsrnto integrate the whole into a state-of-the-art HEV battery pack system. LiPB is an attractive option forrnHEV in the respect of assist power source of it providing higher energy density and power densityrnthan Ni-MH battery. At present, LiPB cell in pack system for TB HEV has about 7Ah in capacity andrn3.8V in nominal voltage. Also, LiPB system delivers superior performance compared to Ni-MHrnsystem in power density, rated capacity and self discharge.rnIn this paper, we introduce HMC's effort to develop large scale LiPB system, and summarize thernperformances of it under HEV condition. Also, we would like to introduce the outline of BMS andrneach of LiPB system compartments.
