EXTERNAL TECHNOLOGY SOURCING AND INTERNAL RD CAPABILITIES: COMPLEMENTS OR SUBSTITUTES FOR TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION?

This paper investigates the influence of external technology sourcing, internal R&Drncapabilities, and their interactions on technology innovation of firms. We first capture thernextent of external technology sourcing using the concept of ?breadth? and investigate thernrelationship between the breadth of external technology sourcing and technology innovation.rnLater, we examined effects of two major components of internal R&D capabilities – internalrnknowledge-base and internal R&D efforts – on technology innovation. Finally, we testrninteraction effects between the breadth of external technology sourcing and the tworncomponents of internal R&D capabilities on technology innovation to prove whether they arerncomplementary or substitutive. Empirical results show that the breadth of externalrntechnology sourcing has an inverted-U shaped relationship with technology innovationrnwhereas two internal R&D capabilities positively affect technology innovation. Surprisingly,rnwe find substitutive relationships between external technology sourcing and internal R&Drncapabilities. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.
