A review on the methods for mitigate the impacts of photovoltaic distributed generation in power systems protection

The increasing global concern to reduce the emission of pollutant encouraged the development of new techniques for generating energy through renewable sources. In addition, generating electricity through small sources near to the consumer is an idea that is increasingly spread worldwide due to the benefits and it is already a reality in several countries. In spite of the advantages, the insertion of other sources in the distribution system may cause impacts on the quality of the energy generated as well as it can alter the power flow and modify voltage values and short circuit currents. These changes may interfere in the operation of distribution network protection equipment which are usually overcurrent devices. With this, it is extremely necessary to study new protection strategies, either using other relay functions besides the overcurrent function or through the installation of new equipment in the system. Therefore, this study aims to survey some suggested protection schemes that can be implemented in electrical power systems to mitigate the possible effects of distributed generation on the grid.
