Fever due to poor contact are one of the important reasons leading to the failure of GIS equipment. However, more researches on the heating characteristics and detection methods of GIS contacts are needed. In this paper, a finite element model of true type 550kV GIS disconnector is established to study the heating characteristics and the temperature distribution with different contact resistance and loads. A heating test platform of 550kV GIS is established in laboratory, the contact and shell temperatures are measured with different contact resistance and loads to compare with simulation results. The results indicate that there is a corresponding relationship between contact temperature and shell temperature of GIS disconnector, and the temperatures are positively associated with contact resistance and loads. The shell temperature can be regarded as the characteristic quantity indicating the state of GIS disconnector.
