In recent years, various industrial applications have begun to require higher power apparatus. Medium voltage and megawatt power level are required by some medium voltage motor drives and utility applications. A multilevel converter not only achieves high power ratings, but also it makes possible the use of renewable energy sources. For a high power application, renewable energy sources such as wind, photovoltaic and fuel cells can be simply interfaced to a Multi-level converter system. The cascaded multilevel inverter has received special attention due to its modularity and simplicity of control among the different topologies for multilevel converters. As current work is mainly focused on the Cascaded H bridge topology of multilevel inverter, and the main objective of this paper to mitigate harmonics in the output of multilevel inverters using optimal selection of firing angles for five level cascaded H bridge multilevel inverters using linearly decreasing inertia weight particle swarm optimization technique.
