Surface electrodes are placed to enhance the measurement of the desired physiological signal, such as the Einthoven lead II locations to maximize the R-wave of the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal. Even so, electrodes react to a number of other bioelectric stimuli including signals related to electromyography and power. Since respiration involves the activation of the diaphragm muscle, respiration rate information is present in the electrocardiogram. This brief summarizes possible methods for extraction of respiration rate from the ECG with application to the streptozotocin (STZ) - diabeticrat.
