Integrated electricity, gas, and heat district systems could potentially offer great value towards more efficient energy usage. In order to reap these benefits however, it would be of fundamental importance to determine an appropriate approach which would enable these systems to optimise their combined operation. While valuable contributions have been made in recent literature regarding multi-energy and district heating networks steady-state analysis and optimisation, the underlying mathematical issues have not been yet fully addressed. The non-linearities involved in such systems, especially when considering the thermal network characteristics, could imply significant convergence difficulties for optimisation solvers. This paper focuses on developing a robust approach towards the solution of combined electricity-gas-heat, network-constrained, continuous formulations of energy district optimisation problems (i.e. multi-energy optimal power flow problems).
