Cloud-based IEC 61850 communication simulation using a standardized network model

The Italian norm CEI 0-16 uses IEC 61850 for communicating with distributed energy resources connected to the medium voltage grid. This paper illustrates a CIM-based software tool for the evaluation of the communication network requirements, in terms of bandwidth, for the widespread implementation of such use case, by using real distribution networks as simulation scenarios. The simulation environment has been designed from the start with the possibility of distributing the simulation on multiple physical hosts, possibly running in cloud environment.
